Worship at my house

I woke up feeling sick this morning. Mostly physical but I know my spirit wasn’t right either. We were unable to attend worship with our congregation today because the first of the youth minister candidates was here to interview. Our intention was to attend another local church service, but like I said…I was sick. Benny could have taken the kids without me but he decided we were going to worship at home as a family instead. He shared this plan with Max over breakfast and Max was so excited he could hardly eat. Benny told him he could preach to us and Max said, “I’ll do communion too!”

We gathered in the living room and Zoe chose the songs we sang. Max prayed for the Lord’s supper, “Dear God, please help us remember this juice represents the blood that dripped from the cross to cover our sins. We love you. Amen.” (I almost cried ) Our children have definitely been watching what we do – Zoe broke off a small piece of the cracker that was the “bread”, and passed the plate to me with a big smile as she put the piece in her mouth. Max stood on a chair as he shared his favorite Bible story with us – The Good Samaritan. He told us all of the details he knew and then said, “and that’s why God wants us to help people”. We watched a Storykeepers video that also has the Good Samaritan story in it. Benny and Zoe both prayed which is precious. She always thanks God for her food and her family – each of us by name – and says, “I wuv you God, Amen!”

There were five of us gathered in Jesus’ name and He was there too. It was wonderful. It’s an awesome feeling to know that God is real to our kids. We didn’t play church today, we did church kid’s style…I think we should do that more often. It was without ceremony but was still orderly, without fancy words but was heartfelt, and it included everyone, not just those of us who have already been baptized. I’m so thankful for my family and the freedom to worship how and when we choose.

Tonight I had the privilege of attending a choir concert. My alma mater (York College) choir came through town and performed at our church. What a blessing! I got to visit with the director Dr. Roush and his wife Sue over dinner in our fellowship hall. I found that it’s so hard to catch up on life in such a small window of time, but I enjoyed the conversation. The memories that flooded my mind were overwhelming.

It is the choir’s tradition that all choir alumni come up and sing the last two songs with the group. Lord, Make Me Thine Instrument, and The Lord Bless you and Keep You (with the full chorus) I knew it was coming and my heart pounded with anticipation. Music has been such a HUGE part of my life, and I’ve really missed being a member of an organized singing group.

As a child, I felt that my voice was the ONLY thing I had going for me. I was a poor kid that didn’t have the newest clothes and toys. I was a teacher’s pet and I had a soft spot for the underdog. None of these things made me very popular. But when I sang, people listened. I was lucky enough to get many of the solos available in choirs and musicals, and I felt I had finally found my niche. I basked in the compliments I received and I was so thankful God gave me one talent. 🙂 To this day I remember every word of the first solo I ever sang…In kindergarten!

I went to York with a music scholarship, and big performance dreams. But, when I started taking my required music courses, I struggled so much that the joy was gone. I decided I’d rather not know the ins and outs of the technical stuff and continue loving music, than for it to be such hard work and risk losing the thing I loved most. I tearfully (and fearfully) went to Dr. Roush to discuss my situation. He worked it out for me to be involved in the right things to keep my scholarship, and he encouraged me to keep using my voice. I stayed in private voice and piano, and participated in chamber singers, women’s ensemble, and Gospel Messengers, a traveling octet group, (THE one to be in). Being part of his choir gave me a place to ground myself during some very hard years of my life. He was my professor, my advisor, and eventually my friend. He gave me learning and leadership opportunities that changed my life. We have had our ups and downs, but I’m thankful for the lessons learned under his guidance. That is why I enjoyed tonight so much. It ‘s really neat to watch him direct and see how he has and hasn’t changed over the years. Singing as an alumnus is such a gift. It reminds me that I am part of something bigger. All of my life experiences come together to make up who I am, and music is still one of the sunniest parts of me.

Now that I’m feeling all nostalgic, I want to share my favorite choir tour memory with you. I wish I could remember every detail of that night, but I can’t. It was my freshmen year, and we were on our winter break tour. I don’t remember where we were, maybe it was St.Louis. Several of the choir members had been feeling under the weather and we were all tired from the traveling. Dr. Roush gave us the usual pep talk about why we were doing what we were doing and we could push through the tiredness and do our best for the people that were coming to hear us sing. One of our favorite songs was, “Let Thy Holy Spirit Come Upon Us”, and that night He did!!! The piece started as usual but a few phrases into it I started feeling strange. It was like an energy was flowing through me and into the girl next to me. We both gave each other a quick glance, so I knew she felt it too. As we sang, a warmth enveloped us – ALL of us. Our rule is to look only at the director, but I couldn’t help myself and I had to look around to make sure I wasn’t imagining this . It was apparent on everyone else’s faces that the whole choir was feeling something. We kept singing and I almost felt like I was floating. It was like wave after wave of warmth and love swept through, over and around us. Many of us girls and some of the guys were overwhelmed and weeping as we sang…including Dr. Roush. The song had become a prayer, and God was answering us! With all of the emotion on those risers, the audience must have thought we were nuts. It took Dr. Roush a few minutes to be able to speak after the song ended. If you know him, that never happens! 🙂 I had never experienced the Holy Spirit in that manner before. It was amazing, glorious, wonderful, and many other words I can’t even think of right now. I still listen to my tape of that song occasionally, and I remember that night and thank God for binding us together as only He can.

Everyone’s blogging about change. It’s the new year and the time to set some goals. Since I’ve already posted mine for the year, and the chocolate one is working out just fine, (j/k) I thought I’d share a few friend’s goals. (Bloggers and otherwise) Adam wants to write, Mike wants to tackle childhood obesity and other major issues, Ed wants financial peace, Laurie wants to lose weight, and I want all of the above.

Change…That word alone sends chills down the spines of good church folk. I like that. I want to be more challenging of the status quo. Repeat after me…Change is good. Now louder…CHANGE IS GOOD! How boring would life be if nothing ever changed? I just accidentally misspelled good and it still made sense. Change is God! I know, the Bible says He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. I’m talking about the change He brings about in us. I for one am very thankful I’m not the same person I was a year ago, or ten years ago. I’ve been chatting on line with an old college friend for the past few days, and we’ve both made it a point to say we’ve changed since college. Why is that so important for me to let people know that? I wasn’t a bad person then…I was and still am pretty likeable.

I once read that God loves us just the way we are, but loves us too much to let us stay that way. It makes sense to me.

My college suite-mate Michelle is a song writer. She wrote a song with the words, “all I know is I’m not the way I used to be…or wish to stay”

“Change is in the air” is another common phrase. Change, we all talk about it, why do we fear it? Is it a lack of control? Are we afraid that others may not like our changes? Maybe it’s that we don’t want to lose our comfy spot – in church or in life. In the blogs I’ve read today, everyone seems to be embracing change as it comes. I don’t see that played out very often, so that encourages and challenges me. I’m thankful God has changed my life!

If I wore a neon sign around my neck that reads “The New and Improved Niki” would that be too subtle?

I will eat chocolate at least once a week.

I will buy expensive, frou-frou coffee drinks whenever the mood strikes.

I will let junk mail pile up perilously high.

I will snack after 6 p.m.

I will only clean when company’s coming.

This is NOT my list. This was taken straight from Laugh with Laura Cornell in Today’s Christian Woman. I do not make New Year’s resolutions because I know that I will never keep them and statistically speaking neither will 79% of America. (o.k….I made that statistic up)

Ten years ago my resolution was to lose weight. I actually did it about six years ago, then I started having babies. On this day last year I was released from the hospital along with my adorable newborn son. I resolved to be just as organized and energetic as before his birth. If you’ve been reading my blog, you’ll know how ridiculous I feel now about making that resolution. I thought if I wrote them down on paper or even told someone else about them, it would help hold me accountable and spur me on to accomplishing them, right? WRONG! When I did eventually give up on my perfectionist self, I felt like a failure. Laurie tells me all the time that I’m too hard on myself, and she’s right. Nope. No resolutions for me. (Unless they are the ones at the top of this blog) 🙂

I will share with you what I would like for 2005.

I would like to be the woman God made me to be, boldly and without shame. I would like to give the people I struggle to love the benefit of the doubt and not to be so defensive when I feel like they’re attacking me. I would like to look myself in the mirror when I wake up in the morning and see my Holy Father looking back at me. I would like to deeply touch the life of at least one teenage girl who desperately needs someone to listen and to care for her needs. I would like to enjoy a worship service…Not just go through the motions, but experience it with everything I am and everything God put in me, and to leave that service feeling refreshed and renewed. I would like our family to cuddle in our king size every morning before we begin our day. I would like to make our home a place of rest and refuge. I would like to travel to see my friends Jennifer and Michelle in Georgia. I would like the confidence it takes to be successful in my business and to see it grow to contribute to our financial stability. I would like to continue to share my heart through my blog. I would like to teach Max how to read and tie his own shoes. I would like to perform songs with Zoe on her stage (the couch) and get her potty trained. I would like to teach Pete how to use silverware. I would like to have weekly date nights with Benny, even if it means we just sit and talk over a hot cup of chai. I would like to write a book. I would like to get my cape back from the cleaners…I’m going to need it while I’m working on all of these things! 🙂

I would like to end by reminding you, and myself, that God is awesome and amazing. He holds my hand as I walk through the valleys of life. He’s the first one applauding when I choose integrity over temptation. He hears my arrow prayers that I often shoot upward, and he listens when I’m long-winded. He knew me before I even existed and he is patient with me when I’m too sensitive or too thick-headed. He’s preparing me to do the works He’s had planned for me to do for Him all along. He loves me fat or thin, tired or hyper, lost or found, forever and ever. There is one thing I know for sure…

2005 will NOT be normal or boring! Bring it on!
