My friend Jan is discussing the Santa debate on her blog this week. She asked me to join in and since I already have a post written regarding that topic, I directed people to my own blog to read my opinion. Wasn’t that nice of me? ๐Ÿ˜€ So, If you’re here from Jan’s blog, or IF you care at all what I think about Santa, then click here to read that post. I will say that I wrote it last year and as our children grow, our holiday traditions evolve and change. This year is going pretty much as we’ve been celebrating the past few years. We’ve already talked about next year looking a little different.

Back to the discussion at hand here on MY Journey. I’m pleased with the responses so far regarding the questions I asked in my last post. I shared them so we could discuss not only what I’ve been thinking about, but to make you think as well. I’ve already said that, but there are still a few that think they need to take this opportunity to lead me to the “right” answers. That’s not where I’m going with this discussion. Even I am not trying to lead you to the “right” answers. Yours may be different than mine. I’d like to keep the discussion going. And let me just jump ahead of a few of you here. Based on previous comments, I know where you’re headed mentally and I’m NOT saying there are no absolutes when it comes to “right” answers. There certainly are. But the tension usually comes from discussing the gray areas.

I’ve been talking with God and I’m confident that I’m to stay on this path…asking questions. I’m going to see The Golden Compass tonight with my husband. I’m still reading books 2 & 3. I’ll be sharing my thoughts and observations as I finish each one. If you tire of the discussion surrounding the books and movies, my hope is that you’ll still stick around to dialog about the deeper issues that they bring up. I appreciate your comments and the wrestling through the faith discussion. Don’t feel you have to agree with me, but please do remain respectful. I’m glad you’re here, and thank you for your input.

I will also be blogging about other topics during this faith discussion. The dialog about TGC stuff is not my only focus. Life is happening all around me and I’m not just an observer, I’m a participant. Coming up next week: My review of the movie, a review of August Rush, where the Nowell family is at this holiday season, some really great song lyrics, and more discussion about tough faith questions. See you then!

On Being Sick…

As I struggle to free myself from the entangled mess my blankets have become, it dawns on me how much I toss and turn when I don’t feel good. At what point during the night had my unsettled stomach turned into a churning flask of yuckiness? Will I make it to the bathroom in time? Do I care if I don’t? Do I care about anything other than the pounding between my ears and the achiness that holds my body captive? Deep breath…o.k., not too deep…you can make it.

3 Saltine crackers and 6 oz. of Sprite later, I’m sure I’m going to die. Feeling this bad is not normal. I hear the faint sounds of my children playing on the other end of the house as everything becomes hazy and I drift back into a sleep so deep no prince’s kiss could wake me. The next thing I know, my prince is nudging me awake telling me I need to drink something. I look at the clock. 4 p.m. I’ve just slept the entire afternoon away after sleeping all morning. What-am I going for a record? I try to sit up and find that I don’t have the energy to do even that by myself. I’m feeling 100 years old, weak, and frail. Neither of those words could be used to describe me on any other day.

So what can I do from the sitting position of my bed? Check my email? Read? Nope. I can’t focus and the words on the page are fuzzy. Watch a movie? I can try, but I know I’m about to fall asleep again. I’m fighting it -knowing I’ll want to sleep tonight. Oh what’s the use? I drift off again. The movie was dumb anyway.

I sleep through the night, only waking long enough to change positions and relieve my aching body. I’m hot. Now I’m cold. And I’m hot again. What’s that old saying? Feed a fever, starve a cold? Or was it the other way around? I’m hungry but the thought of food makes me queasy. Queasy…what a funny word.

I’m missing a birthday party and band practice today. All I can think about is snuggling down in my blankets and ignoring the world. A little chicken soup and more Sprite and I’m ready to once again sleep the afternoon away. I’m thanking God for my prince keeping things under control while I rest.

I have quite an extensive collection of quotes by various famous people, my favorite authors, and my quirky friends. When I was in college, it was “the thing to do” to hang quotes on your dorm room door. Even then I was surrounded by friends who loved the written word as much as I did. I decided to share a few of my favorite quotes of late. Enjoy!

“In the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins – not by strength but by perseverance.” ~H. Jackson Brown

“Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.” ~Ronald E. Osborn

“Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” ~Berthold Auerbach

“Reading furnishes the mind only with material for knowledge; it is thinking that makes what we read ours.” ~John Locke

“It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” ~J.K. Rowling

“If you make people think they’re thinking, they’ll love you; But if you really make them think, they’ll hate you. ~Don Marquis

“But to become a freak one needs a strong character and unusual determination.” ~George Burchett, Memoirs of a Tattooist.

“The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one.” ~Elbert Hubbard

I received a blogger award today from my friend Tonya. The category was for Social Conscience. Thank you Tonya for thinking of me and honoring me in this way. Now I’m supposed to pass it on…

integrity.jpg

This award focuses on the following:
-Creativity
-Spirit of Giving
-For Keeping It Real
-For Social Conscience
-For Staying True to Their Beliefs

Since Tonya already awarded some of my closest friends in Denver, I’ve decided to look outside my local circle and award some of my far-away (only in miles) friends.

For Creativity I choose Tawnya Marie, my closest friend and the most creative and artistic person I know. Everything she touches glows with life and promise. She makes the world a brighter and more colorful place to live. She calls forth the creator within me and I love her for it.

For The Spirit of Giving, I choose Jetty Betty. She’s been giving me encouragement and love almost since Day 1 of my blogging life. She is genuine, loving, and such a great example to me and many others. I don’t get over to her blog nearly enough, and I can’t wait to see her again.

For Keeping it Real, I choose Claudia Mair Burney. The woman has an amazing way with words and she isn’t all rosy and fru-fru when there are tears in her eyes and heart. She’s funny and honest and lays it all out there for the world to see – not just the good, but the bad and the ugly as well. She’s the only sassy lady on this list that I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet.

For Social Conscience, I choose Heather Meyer, my red-headed step-child friend. We’ve discussed the possibilities of our being separated at birth and despite the fact that we are both red-headed and step-children, it’s truly impossible seeing that I’m older by years and not minutes. But our lives have run very similar courses including what we do for a living and how we choose to focus on the marginalized in society. She is way more official than I am, and she’s got a lot more knowledge as well. Kudos to you girl! You Rock!

For Staying True to Their Beliefs, I choose Jennifer King, my enemy turned soul mate/heart friend. She loves the Lord unapologetically and stands firm even when facing much opposition from the enemy. She also responds in love (but with conviction) to believers who take a different view on issues (they are not the enemy). She knows what she believes and why – How can I not respect and applaud that?

Thanks Ladies for being such an inspiration to me! There you go, a Kansan, a Texan, a Michiganian, a Coloradan, and a Canadian. I think I may have made one of those words up. Anywhooo…I’m spreading the bloggin’ love around! lol ๐Ÿ™‚

niki-high-school-1.jpg

I’ve recently been getting in touch with friends from my past. As exciting as that is, it’s also been a little weird. I am such a different person than I was in high school, yet there are pieces of me that remain the same. I’ve hoped that it was enough common ground to renew what friendship there was with these people. I’m sure they’ve changed as well. It’s called growing up.

In August I traveled back to WI for my sister’s wedding. While there I spent the evening with the woman who used to be my best friend in junior high and part of high school. Some rough things happened in our relationship and somehow the friendship slid into oblivion and we lost touch. I hadn’t seen her since high school and was really nervous about having anything to talk about. When I’m nervous, I talk…a lot. I couldn’t seem to shut my mouth that night. I couldn’t handle the moments of silence that crept in, and I couldn’t read her at all. I still don’t know how she felt about our reunion.
I felt this urge to tell her my life story. To somehow explain who I was back then and why. It doesn’t matter anymore, but it goes back to that dumb need I have to be heard and understood. I wanted to tell her why I acted the way I did, why I hid so many things about my family, why I was so tough and angry. Why I always spent the night at her house and never invited her to spend the night at mine. None of it matters anymore. Let it go. That’s what I told myself over and over again. She probably doesn’t even remember. I however, have the uncanny ability to remember random thoughts and conversations years and years after they happened. It drives Benny crazy. I forget to mail birthday cards. I forget about appointments unless I’ve written them on two different calendars. I forget to put gas in the van until it’s almost empty. But I remember the solo I sang in my Kindergarten play, and what I was wearing and the song that was playing when my best guy friend asked me to dance at the single homecoming dance I attended where we were both serving punch.ย  I remember BW’s football jersey number, and the silly jokes my 7th grade Science teacher told us while we dissected frogs.ย  And I remember the rain dripping down the windshield and the feel of the necklace in my hand that my boyfriend had given me moments before breaking up with me on Valentine’s Day in 1989.ย  Weird.ย  That’s me.ย  I remember odd things.ย  I remember things others don’t until reminded of them.ย  So maybe I remember things differently than those who knew me when remember them.

Last week I found a friend on Facebook. This guy was a light in my life in high school. He could ALWAYS make me laugh and he enjoyed doing so. It’s fun to see him all grown up and married with children. I have wished the best for him for years and I’m excited to have him back in my life. He still makes me laugh. I believe he was my first verbal sparring partner (in a good way) and I’ve only had a few in my 35 years of life. He trained me well. Through him I found another friend. I think this may be snowballing. I could be in touch with everyone I’ve ever known soon. lolย  I don’t think I’m interested in taking it that far. There are a few people I’d like to forget thank-you-very-much!

When meeting old friends after several years, the urge is the same. Explain myself. Why is that? I’m not a bad person and I wasn’t when they knew me either. Do I have this twisted sense of who I was and it’s not even close to who everyone else thought I was? Why the insecurity? Is it enough to know they are doing well and move along with life? With me that’s rarely the case. I want to know what makes them tick too. I love people. That’s who I am. That’s what I do. I believe the people in my life have been there for a reason-even if only for a season. I also believe you can never have too many friends, but I’m certainly not living in the past.

I have come so far, or so I feel,

I rose above my past.

I’ve climbed tall mountains of uncertainty,

and been over fences in search of greener grass.

I’ve changed a lot, yet I’m not the way I wish to be…

it haunts me still – my past.

I wrote that in college. Those words still ring true to me after all these years. Oh, I’m not as melancholy as I was when I wrote that, but the question remains. Who am I compared to who I was and who I am becoming? Don’t we all wonder that at one point or another? I look at the two pictures of me in this post and I think. WOW! Two very different people with drastically different goals in life. It can’t just be the difference of 18 years, can it? The firstย  – a copy of a copy -was taken around my 17th birthday for Senior pictures and the second was taken by my best friend this summer for my 35th birthday. For my friends who knew me and loved me at 17…I hope they like me at 35 as well. If they don’t…well…they’re missing out.ย  I’m like fine wine – I get better with age. ๐Ÿ˜‰ย  lol
