I stole borrowed copied this from my friend Kevin’s blog. 😉  While I am in total agreement with his point about this video, something else jumped out at me.  I’m astounded by our ability to change the world with one small act.  How you treat one person today can impact hundreds of others as the wave of love, compassion, and validation ripples outward.  It’s an amazing feeling when it comes back to you.  Enjoy the video.  It’s 15  minutes well spent.  🙂

I dropped Zoe off at a birthday party this afternoon and decided I needed to find somewhere fun to eat.  Our family is beginning a healing diet tomorrow so I wanted something that I wouldn’t be eating for awhile – if ever again.  The heavens opened up and a ray of sunshine bathed Panera in a soft glow.  O.K.  It was the only non-fast food I could find since I was in an unfamiliar part of Denver.  The plan was to eat while reading my book, then hit the local library book outlet across the street.  I had two kid-free hours to enjoy.  But plans change.

As I stood there deliberating between the Turkey Panini and the Cheddar Broccoli soup, a friendly, well dressed, red-headed woman joined the line behind me.  She commented on not knowing what to order.  I assumed she was talking to me since the cashier had stepped away for a minute and we were the only two standing there.  So I replied back that it was indeed hard to choose from such a broad variety of soups and sandwiches.  I ordered, paid, and waited for my food while sipping an iced chai.  (I’m going to miss those!)

I assume I’m in the minority of people who like to occasionally dine alone since most of the time, you see people eating in couples or groups.  I don’t mind the quiet time to myself, and it sort of ticks me off when wait staff act like that’s just weird and sad to be dining alone…anyway…

I found a seat and began organizing my food. (Stop laughing – yes I organize that too.)  I noticed the lady that had been behind me in line was looking for a place to sit alone too.  My first instinct was to get her attention and ask her to join me, but I stopped myself.  I’m observant when I choose to be and my inner Sherlock Holmes kicked in.  She wasn’t in a hurry – she was dining in.  She had no wedding band which most likely meant she was either single, divorced, or widowed.  She didn’t look like a serial killer, though she may have wondered about me when I finally decided to walk over and ask her if she’d like to join me.  She stared at me for a minute – maybe letting her inner Sherlock process the invitation.   I said, “Excuse me, would you like to join me for lunch?”  She stared and said, “Um” while looking confused.  I was a complete stranger after all.  “I just noticed that you and I are both dining alone and thought maybe a little conversation would be nice.”  She thought about that for a second and said, “I guess that would be o.k.” and came to join me at my table.

An hour later we were exchanging phone numbers and email addresses and talking about the possibility of meeting for lunch again in the future.  We agreed that we don’t believe in chance, and that it had been a pleasant way to spend an hour.  I look forward to seeing Sandy again and getting to know her better.  I have a new friend because I chose to step out of my comfort zone and ask a stranger to have lunch with me.

As I was driving to pick Zoe up, I thought about courage and what I had done.  It struck me that it wasn’t so different than what we do with our street kids and yet I was more nervous asking Sandy to lunch.  Then I thought about Dana.  He was one of Benny’s roommates in college.  He was at home in York, PA and hanging out at the mall, sitting on a bench when Dr. Roberts, the President of our college at the time, sat down beside him .  They struck up a conversation, and that’s how Dana came to York College…in Nebraska.  An invitation from a random stranger.  Because of that conversation he now has a beautiful wife and daughters, good friends all over the country, and we had the honor of him being a groomsmen in our wedding.

I enjoyed having lunch with a stranger today.  Who knows what friends are waiting for me out there?

I’m on my way out the door for a long awaited 3 day renewal in the mountains.  Just me.  I have a feeling this will be my own little version of “The Shack”…maybe not quite so intense, but just as healing and sweet.  See you all back here next week. 🙂

We’re packing the van and headed for the hills…well…the mountains.  The rest of the week will be spent with Benny’s family.  My MIL is hosting 4 families including ours.  The cousins will get to play, there will be games with prizes, LOTS of food, target practice (seriously), and hiking up gramma’s mountain behind her house.  I think I’ll bring my latest writing project so I can avoid that particular activity. 🙂  After the extended relatives leave on Friday, the Nowell/Miller clan will be celebrating our Christmas gift exchange.  The inlaws will be in TX for the month of December so this is our last chance for all of us to be together for awhile.  It’s a rare opportunity, so I savor it when it happens.

I hope your holiday is filled with family and friends, good food, and a thankful spirit for all that we are blessed with this year.  The blessings are many!  Count them, and don’t forget to bless someone else too.

Best wishes, safe travels, happy trails, sayonara, adios, ciao, and see you back here next week!

At Last…

My best friend Tawnya married the love of her life on Saturday.   After severals years as a regular in the dating game and putting up with a lot of carp (rearrange those letters if you want to), she found the fish in the sea that was meant for her. 🙂  James adores her and so does his family.  At the rehearsal dinner they kept talking about how beautiful she is and that James thinks she’s perfect.  They lavished their praise on her and made her cry. I loved seeing her receive such glowing acceptance and I was so honored to be a part of all of the last minute preparations and the ceremony.  The week before the wedding was packed full of last minute details, but I was glad to just be with Tawnya.  That doesn’t happen very often with me in Denver and her in Kansas City.  She is so precious to me and I couldn’t be happier that she has found what she has been looking for…a man who sees her, loves her, accepts her, thinks she’s amazing, and claims her as his own.  Tawnya told me that James leaned over in church and told her, “God made you for me”.  Mmmmm…that’s good stuff.

The weekend also held the expectation that the DOE club would be gathering for a mini-reunion.  It sort of happened, but not really.  Sure, we were all staying under the same roof, but there were several factors that kept us from really getting to visit like old times.  Exhaustion was #1 on the list.  Maybe next time under circumstances that are a little more flexible.  We did however enjoy some Oreos – I think it’s an unofficial rule that we can’t gather and NOT do that.  Here’s a pic of the DOE’s that were able to attend the wedding.  L-R is Taj, Keri, Tawnya, Me, Megan, and LaRica.  Doesn’t Tawnya look like a princess?

It was also great to see other York friends like Michelle, Jenn & Joe, and Paul & Shalee.  I’ll post more pics, but I have to wait for Taj to put them on Facebook or send me a disc.  She’s an amazing photographer!  So is her husband Tommy – who was fabulous putting up with a house overflowing with estrogen for a whole weekend.  He was such a good sport. More on the DOE’s later.

For those of you who knew I went to Kansas City with a sinus infection and prayed for my health, thank you so much.  Between that and my pet allergies, it was a hard week.  I made it through and was able to sing at the wedding and reception.  Singing with old college friends was great.  Oh how I miss that!  I’m home and feeling better but I’ve still not caught up on my rest.  I’m taking it easy this week and resting as I can.  I’m glad to be back in dry Colorado.  Humidity is highly overrated.
