My thoughts on politics

IMHO, If you’ve never read Relevant Magazine, you’re missing out. From beginning to end, I find it informative, encouraging, challenging, and funny. This particular issue did something amazing. It reflected my political beliefs almost exactly. Seriously. I don’t have permission to reprint the whole article here, but I can print parts of it as long as I site my source. RELEVANT Magazine, Sept./Oct. edition 2008, page 6, /First Word-Leading The Charge written by Cameron Strang. Consider it sited. 🙂

“I’m someone who tries to think independently and objectively, rather than simply follow what the pundits tell me to think. Because of that, I’ve realized I cannot fully embrace either political party. Both sides of the aisle have some great ideas and goals. But both also have areas where they simply get it wrong.”

“… historically, real, lasting change has started first at the grassroots level long before it was ever legislated. Cultural mindshifts influence Washington, not the other way around.”

“Many Christians traditionally have voted Republican because of their justifiable conviction to protect the lives of the unborn. Now many younger Christians are voting Democrat because of their justifiable desire to see our nation, the most prosperous in the world, address issues of poverty, global aid, and the environment. The problem is, many Christians vote these convictions, but that’s largely where their personal involvement in the issues stops. Are the government leaders we vote for meant to do our job for us? If God has given you a heart for the poor, or to see a reduction in the number of abortions, or to promote peace…then your personal focus needs to be on that-whether or not the President shares your same values.”

“…what if one day every value Christians stand for, even religious freedom itself, was legislatively removed? Christians in China and many other parts of the world face this reality every day. Would it change us? Dare I say, it might actually spur the Body of Christ here into greater action. Could it be that the loss of religious freedoms would ultimately be the best thing for American Christians because it would cause us to stand on our own two feet rather than relying on the government to legislate our faith and values for us?”

“Christians should be focused on personal action regardless of legislation, not just waiting for the right number of Supreme Court justices to come along. I’m not saying don’t vote. Do. Vote your convictions and let your voice be heard-that’s one of the perks of living in a democracy. But don’t let politics breed division, or make you see people in a different light. If you have a passion for an issue, rather than judging someone who doesn’t share that passion or viewpoint, just go do something about it. Give your life to it. Be the change you want to see.”

“We need to pray for our leaders and our country, but always remember that our leaders and country do not define us. We are the generation that will shape the direction culture, government, and social action will take in the next 50 years. It’s not up to Washington, it’s up to us – and I say it’s time we step up and lead the charge. But that means with our lives, our finances and our actions every day. Not just Nov. 4.”

I have a friend who can’t stand Obama and another who can’t stand McCain. They’re both Christians and both want to talk to everyone they know about the election, bad jokes and all. Thankfully they live in different states and will never butt heads in front of me. I have another friend who doesn’t believe in voting because they believe the outcome of the election is a product of God’s will. I’ve made my point about God working through His people and that there may be a difference in what God allows and what He wants – to no avail. Notice I used the word “friend”. I don’t have to share their convictions to be their friends. I don’t draw lines and divide myself from others because they will vote differently than I do. I don’t care who you vote for. I will love you anyway.

I am not a Democrat or a Republican. I don’t align myself with any particular political party. Will I vote? Absolutely. I believe my vote counts. But my vote doesn’t change who I am on a daily basis. What I do is not based on legislature, it’s based on love. You will not hear me complain about the President – no matter who wins or loses. Their job is hard enough and they need my prayers. I have too many other things happening in life to spend all my time complaining about the current administration . There are people on the streets, in my neighborhood, and in my home that need my attention and devotion. There is no government that can dictate how I choose to leave my mark on the world – Loving God and loving others – extravagantly.

Not exactly my idea of a fun time, but my friend Alex is a little nuts and it’s HIS idea of a fun trip. 🙂  Alex is the husband of my Captivating Sister, Wendy.   He and his friend Steve flew into Seattle on Monday and plan to take 17 days to ride down to San Francisco.  They’ll see the sites, meet some locals, and spend time with each other trekking down the coast pulling bike trailers.  They are keeping an online journal to  keep their families and friends updated on their location, news/stories/anecdotes and pictures from the trip.

Alex said on his blog: “Interesting things always happen when we travel places.”  (That’s him on the right.)

If all goes well, they will fly back to Denver on September 4th.  You can check out their adventure on their site http://cuesofttrek2008.wordpress.com/ , leave them a comment of encouragement, or just pray for their safety and health as they travel.  I love that they’re taking time to do something they love.  Way to go Alex and Steve!  Please keep both of their families in your prayers while they’re away.  I don’t know Steve, but here’s a picture of Alex’s family.

Rocky paths to freedom

There is so much to say that I feel like I’m on the verge of bursting. As summer is winding down, I have a lot of changes happening in my life all at once. Some are quite painful and some are exhilaratingly wonderful. I am mourning what has been while embracing hope for things to come. I am a paradox. Aren’t we all?

I received an email this morning from a friend who had some advice for me. He packaged it in beautiful words and they spoke hope and freedom into my heart. I think he’s on a similar journey and we understand each other. I am so blessed to have good friends, and I’m trying hard to be one.

I spoke on the phone with another friend last week and was able to voice a question that has been floating around in my mind lately. Am I done blogging? I asked him if he felt like the time for this had passed. He got me started on this part of my journey and we’ve both backed off from it quite a bit – neither one of us on purpose. It’s hard to put life and thoughts into words for others to read. It can leave you vulnerable to misinterpretation and criticism, not to mention that part of the time I’m forming these posts, I’m still thinking things through and my thoughts haven’t reached solid form when they spill out through my fingertips. Sometimes there is just too much to share and it feels safer to keep it inside.

I’m not done blogging. I’m figuring things out and I’m living in freedom, so I make no promises as to how often I’ll post and no apologies for the periods of time when I need to step away from the blogosphere to learn, process, grow, mourn, or just play for awhile.

The path I’m on is a bit rocky right now. That’s why I changed the picture at the top of the page. It was taken 4 weeks ago up on the Continental Divide by one of the girls who was here participating in our summer program for SEVENS. It’s a good reminder to me that rocky paths can lead me to and through beautiful places.  🙂

I leave you today with an old video of one of my new favorite singers, Francesca Battistelli.  I love the chorus of this song!  It’s what I’m doing…where I’m living…what I’m traversing…who I am trying to be…

I got a couple dents in my fender, got a couple rips in my jeans

Trying to fit the pieces together but perfection is my enemy

On my own I’m so clumsy, but on your shoulders I can see

I’m free to be me

We are still busy with our 2nd summer group.  I’ll update here and on the SEVENS blog next week when I get back from my trip.  I just wanted to say thanks for all the emails and Facebook messages for my birthday.  It was a good day.  Benny gave me a big rock.  Not the kind you wear on your hand…a real rock.  You know I have a thing for those. 🙂  That’s Mark, one of the Granbury kids.  He hauled it to the van for me.  For those of you who may be worried we were taking things out of nature that we shouldn’t, our rappel site is on private land and we know the owner. 🙂

The Captivating women are heading to Frisco on Saturday morning for a 2 day retreat.  Wendy has a friend who is letting us all use her condo for only the cleaning fee.  WooHoo!  Can you say Laughter? Tears? Chocolate? Deep Conversation?  Chocolate?  Hot tub? Chocolate?  You get the point. lol  Here’s an old picture of us all.  See you next week!

From Kim’s Blog:

I’d like to take a moment to thank all of the thousands of wonderful people who nominated us over the years for the show. When we heard about the nominations, tears flowed… abundantly.

God is so good. Through Josh’s life and death hospitalizations. Through Kayla’s trials and triumphs with her disorder. Through her brain surgery and recovery. And through the day to day challenges we’ve faced, God is so good. And He will continue to be.

This experience has changed our lives in many, many ways. Kayla’s health has skyrocketed in the time we’ve been in our new home, and Josh hasn’t had one incident with his asthma. I don’t have to take Kayla’s temp all the time inside our home. And as we are in the hot months, spending time inside is never boring. 🙂

Thank you to our wonderful community, Colorado Springs. Thank you to Premier Homes. Thank you to all of you who gave of your time, money, effort, gifts, products – the list could go on forever. We are so very grateful to all of you.

I’ve received cards, notes, and emails from thousands of people – telling me that this experience changed their lives. Let me say, that we feel so very blessed by all of YOU. And we want to thank YOU.

David Phelps – performs my favorite song – THAT’S WHAT LOVE IS – on our episode. His generosity and love never cease to amaze me. He is an incredible person – I hope you all check out the page on this website about him, and go to his website as well!

Heat Relief Depot – provides the cooling vests that you see Kayla wearing, and have made it possible for her to get out of the house occasionally. Their information is on the Kayla’s Story page, as well as the Links page.

Gift of Pain – is the foundation that has helped our family numerous times over the years. Gabby’s parents are the ones who started the foundation, and their hope is to help all the families out there who deal with this very rare disorder on a day to day basis. Thank you for your support – and to all of you who have given over the years to help provide for the medical needs. Their info is also on the Kayla’s Story page and the Links page.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. And praise God from Whom all blessings flow. God Bless You All!
