I’m on my way out the door for a long awaited 3 day renewal in the mountains. Just me. I have a feeling this will be my own little version of “The Shack”…maybe not quite so intense, but just as healing and sweet. See you all back here next week. 🙂
We had a great time with Benny’s family and some new friends over the Thanksgiving weekend. Then we came home. Things haven’t been so fun since then. Benny has been fighting illness for the past three weeks. We thought he was doing better and he was able to enjoy time with his brother and the rest of the family for the holiday, but arriving home, he took a serious turn for the worse. He’s been in bed since last Sunday (Nov. 3oth) and today is the first day he feels well enough to be up and around a bit. Hear my sigh of relief?
Last Monday he started getting some swelling in his nose and by Wednesday he looked like someone had beaten his face up. On Thursday we took him to Urgent Care. The doctor walked in the room and said, “OH MY G-D! YOU NEED TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL RIGHT NOW!!” Nice. So we took him to the ER where they told us he had a double infection and hooked him up to begin intravenous antibiotics. He has Facial Cellulitis – a severe swelling under the skin due to infection, and Impetigo -another skin infection which produces a honey colored crust as the offending bacteria bubbles up through your skin. Yeah, gross. The poor man has been in pain all week. So I began to send out email prayer requests and make calls. He had a total of four ER visits for antibiotics through the IV and finally received a prescription for oral meds around 1 a.m. on Saturday morning. It’s been a LONG week for us all!
We are so thankful to have good friends! Dr. Zack hsd taken such good care of us for the past few years and this was no exception. My friend Paula kept our kids overnight Thursday and Friday so I could be at the ER with Benny. A lady from our church that we don’t know very well, Trish, happened to be in the ER with another friend at the same time we were, so she prayed over Benny and sat with us for awhile. She also took our kids to church yesterday so we could be home resting. Robb, one of our Pastors, came to the ER to sit with us as well. We’ve received many calls and emails from friends around the country who are praying for Benny’s healing. Yes, we are blessed indeed! Benny is on the mend. He doesn’t take medication, even Tylenol for headaches, so the strong antibiotics are kicking his butt. Please keep praying for him. His fever is gone, the swelling is almost gone, but he is still in pain. So we continue to rest…
What else has been happening?
I received an email yesterday telling me that the book that my story is published in is now available on Amazon.com. 🙂 I’m SO excited! I can’t wait to get my copy in the mail. I’ll be ordering a few at my discounted rate, so be watching for a chance to win one here on MY Journey. If you’re interested in checking it out, click on the picture.
“Waiting… a season of life steeped in reflection and silence except, from time to time, for the scratching of a pen on paper to capture thoughts and convey a hopeful or trembling heart. This collection gathers the intimate words of people in a variety of circumstances where their need for God is most profound.”
It’s another promise revealed and realized. A rainbow with the rain. I am humbled by God’s love. 🙂

We’re packing the van and headed for the hills…well…the mountains. The rest of the week will be spent with Benny’s family. My MIL is hosting 4 families including ours. The cousins will get to play, there will be games with prizes, LOTS of food, target practice (seriously), and hiking up gramma’s mountain behind her house. I think I’ll bring my latest writing project so I can avoid that particular activity. 🙂 After the extended relatives leave on Friday, the Nowell/Miller clan will be celebrating our Christmas gift exchange. The inlaws will be in TX for the month of December so this is our last chance for all of us to be together for awhile. It’s a rare opportunity, so I savor it when it happens.
I hope your holiday is filled with family and friends, good food, and a thankful spirit for all that we are blessed with this year. The blessings are many! Count them, and don’t forget to bless someone else too.
Best wishes, safe travels, happy trails, sayonara, adios, ciao, and see you back here next week!

I’ve had a few people ask why I wanted to tackle such a controversial subject on my Sex, Love, and Marriage blog. Simple…I didn’t want to. I believe I was supposed to do it. That blog is my place to discuss difficult subjects that aren’t normally talked about in Christian circles. Silence isn’t always golden. Silence can breed ignorance, misunderstanding, judgment, and a long list of other words I don’t really want to be associated with. As I stated in that post, it took me a long time to post it. I wasn’t sure how people would respond to it. I didn’t want to be judged, slandered, ridiculed, alienated, or blacklisted from anything. Fear is such an ugly word, isn’t it? It’s possible none of those things will happen…doubtful, but possible.
There are some wonderful people in my life that don’t feel they have anyone else to talk to and discuss the hard topics with. They too fear judgment. So my motivation was to give those friends some thoughts and a place to dialog should they choose to. (I allow anonymous comments, but moderate them before they appear on the webpage.) Most of those discussions have been happening over the phone and through email, but I felt like there was a need to open it up to a wider audience. Respectful discussion is healthy and we all need to be doing more if it.
A very wise woman recently said (to me and a few hundred others):
“It’s important to write and speak the truth, but we must not forget that we should marry love to the truth. I once had a friend who got angry with me when I confronted her about her hurtful, demeaning words toward someone else. “I’m being authentic,” she told me. I thought about that a long time. But as I ruminated, I realized there’s more to authenticity than simply letting your thought-of-the-moment fly out there. We must have self-control. We must tender our words. We must speak (and write) the truth that comes into our head in the manner we’d like to receive it—kindly, compassionately. I agree that as writers we should be truthful, but keep in mind we must also temper our words, season them with grace. The world is full of truth-tellers, but I fear it’s lacking in kind-speakers.”
I left her name off because I don’t have permission to share that with you. But I thought what she said was beautiful and eloquent. It had nothing to do with my blogging, but it was a good reminder to me to not be “in your face” about my frustrations with Christian circles and the lack of communication surrounding the topic of sex. So I hope my readers will understand what a labor of love that post really was. It was a gift to some friends who need to talk about it. I hope they all respond. Either way, I want to be both a truth-teller AND a kind-speaker.

So are the days of my life. O.K. Maybe I’m mixing my metaphors again. I’m just trying to express my exasperation at how little I’ve accomplished considering how quickly time seems to be passing lately. Tomorrow I’m staying home ALL day. Just me, school with the kiddos, and Mt. Washmore. I’m hoping to FINALLY post the blog post I’ve been working on for 2 months on the Sex, Love, and Marriage blog. It’s about the “M” word…and I don’t mean “marriage.” It has been put off long enough. It’s definitely one of those “feel the fear and do it anyway” situations. I’d also like to spend nap time reading. I picked up a copy of Starving Jesus, Craig Gross’ latest book. His book The Gutter was AMAZING! It’s pretty close to what I would write If I were going to write a book about SEVENS and why we do what we do. Good stuff!
Speaking of writing…I’ve been published! If you’ve already heard this story, smile and celebrate with me again. 🙂 I submitted a story for a compilation book that will be coming out in the next few months. I received a note from the publisher saying they’d be honored to include my story in their book, pay me a small fee, and send me a limited edition hard cover when the book is released. I am so excited, I’m telling everyone who will listen! It’s my first submission and my small (big in my mind) success is giving me the courage to submit some other pieces I’ve written. It’s a great start for me. I’ll blog about it when the book is released. I’ve always dreamed of seeing my name printed in a book. I still dream of the day my name is printed ON a book. I have so much to learn and I’m eager to do so. Thank you to all who have encouraged me to keep writing. 🙂
Now I’m off to write about the “M” word…
