I started writing a post yesterday and the more I typed, the angrier I got. I had unknowingly stepped on a soapbox and I couldn’t seem to find my way off. So I took a break and checked my email. That’s when I got the email from Michael and posted that instead. I took my focus off of the soapbox and put it on who Jesus is to me and I calmed down immediately. My heart rate went back to normal and the red drained back out of my cheeks.

It’s a new day, and the soapbox is still there, but I can calmly address it now, as I think I’ve addressed it before. Here goes:

I believe God gave me a brain and He expects me to use it. He even promises to give me wisdom if I ask for it. In today’s society, as in every other society that has existed, we’re taught to use our brains, then we’re criticized if we do. If you think outside of the box then you’re admired by a few and thought crazy by many. We’re taught both subtly and blatantly to go along with public opinion. Exactly who is “public opinion” and why do I have to agree with them?
I am reminded daily how I don’t “fit in”, and my ideas are strange and sometimes offensive to others. What I do believe, I hold to strongly, but I don’t expect everyone else to agree with my every belief. I rarely read the newspaper anymore because I don’t agree with the agendas presented. I view watching the news the same way. You CANNOT believe everything you read and hear from the media, your doctor, your neighbor, or your hairdresser. There are agendas being presented, and some of them are very contrary to the way God directs us to live our lives. It can be very difficult to live in the world and not be just like the world. You have to view everything as a tool for decision making, not as the decision itself.

I guess my challenge to you, and always to myself, is to THINK.

I aim to think outside of the box in everything I do, but sometimes find myself doubting because it’s always been done a certain way. I think we all struggle to think creatively sometimes. We are so spoon fed by the media, big corporations, pharmaceutical companies, and even our educators that life is a certain way and we need to just get on board. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like being told what to do. I know it’s an obedience issue, and I thank God that I have it. He and I have been working on my obedience to Him my whole life. But I have a hard time blindly obeying the world when they feed me their knowledge and direction for my life. Afterall, things that were once thought crazy are now a normal part of our society. We’re a fickle people, being tossed about on the winds of change when it comes to Science, Medicine, School Reform, and Worshipping our Creator.

There is only one thing (Person) that remains the same through time, so I bring all of my questions and decisions to God. On the things He chooses to remain silent on, I do my best to use the brain and heart He gave me and decide for myself. That’s more important to me than any celebrity endorsement, expert opinion, or popular opinion. What do you need to strip away to be able to see with a clear head and discern between what the world is telling you to believe and how God is telling you to live?

In high school my favorite shirt was a t-shirt that had a tank full of fish swimming one way, and the icthus (Christian fish symbol) swimming in the opposite direction. I don’t wear such t-shirts today, but if I did, I’d want the icthus to be swimming the same way as the other fish. I believe I can “swim with the crowd” and still be different enough that the other fish take notice. This would have been considered a dangerous thought by the adults who were afraid I’d look just like the world. Why would you tell a teenager to swim with the crowd??? Because if you’re not with the crowd, you’re not heard or even noticed. Example: Do you think the streetkids even care what the well-dressed church people are doing on Sundays? If you walk in downtown Denver and see a well meaning guy playing Christian songs on his guitar and handing out sandwiches, you’ll see the streetkids staying away from him, or maybe taking a sandwich then immediately walking away. The guy means well, but what is he doing? Trying to get a little Jesus on the streetkids by singing at them? When we walk with the streetkids for a while, or ride the bus with them while they’re trying to keep warm, they notice. When we play pool with them and take them to their court dates, they notice. When we hold their babies, or feed them week after week and it’s not just a quarterly service project, they notice. THAT’S who I want to be – who I am. The world tells me we need to just make the homeless problem go away. I had to THINK for myself.

The following is a note from a man who thinks. I do not fully endorse his website because I am unfamiliar with most of it. I’ve only begun to scratch the surface of healthier living, as Dr. Mercola calls it. He has some good ideas that make sense to me. (Bold type added for emphasis)

Check him out at www.mercola.com

It is amazing how much of the forward progress made in history has been by people who weren’t conventional, but rather thought in odd, new ways. That has to be the case, doesn’t it? If they didn’t think in different ways, they wouldn’t have come up with different ideas — even though that probably made them seem somewhat off-kilter to those around them.

New ideas in our culture typically follow a familiar pattern. They are usually:

First derided
Then attacked
Then finally accepted

I have been working iconoclastically to overthrow popular modern American medical concepts for many years now and am VERY familiar with the process. Can’t tell you how many thousands of people have labeled me as a quack only to have the same people years later recant and confirm that the ideas I was teaching were indeed true.

Always be careful to think for yourself and check out new ideas when you hear about them. Many of the practices of “alternative” medicine that used to be viewed as fringe or crackpot are now accepted as common sense, and many more that are still viewed as fringe or crackpot are, frankly, better for your health than conventional medicine.

Whenever you hear about a new, odd-sounding idea, think for yourself, don’t blindly accept it. Take the time to thoroughly examine, investigate and determine the truth as best you can. Believe me, it is FAR easier to do this now than it used to be. With the Internet and a bit of time, in a matter of a few hours you can become more knowledgeable in a topic that 10 years ago would have taken a person months to achieve.

We are in the middle of a massive paradigm shift and most of us don’t recognize it. You have access to incredible power and tools that only a few years ago even the wealthiest and smartest people on the planet would have been envious of.

One of our Pastors, Michael, sends out emails to our church family every week. They always make me grateful to be a part of such a community of believers. I haven’t seen Michael in a few weeks, but I can hear his voice in today’s email. I can feel the passion for God and His children. I can see his eyes looking right at me as if his message is only for me and God has something for me to think about today. Today’s message hit me unexpectedly and I am so thankful for the many ways God speaks to me, and humbled THAT he speaks to me. I also know that it is my gift and calling to pass along what God tells me to. So here is your challenge for today. Think away my friends!

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
-Jesus (Mark 8:29)

Jesus asked his closest friends this. I always wonder what I would answer if Christ asked me who I think he is. I would start pointing to what others have said about him. I think he would stop me and say “no, I’m asking YOU!”. So I would say that I have a lot of friends who believe in him. “No, YOU!” Well, I have a lot of evidence that suggest you were around. I have a community that worships you together. I have a Bible I read. I have songs I sing. I have childhood memories of church. I have all of this.

But again, if he asked me who I think he really is, I would have to respond with personal words that have to do with this relationship we have shared. I would respond with this: “Jesus, I believe you are my encourager, my peace, my joy, my friend, my teacher, gentle guider, my emotional center. You have been there when I needed you most. You helped me learn to love and be loved by people. You have given me security and faith. But you are more. I believe you are my Lord. I believe you are God.”.

Who do you say Jesus is? Not proofs or stories you have heard. Who do YOU say he is?

Benny and I watched this movie Wednesday night and it was awesome! It is a documentary about the five missionary families that moved to Ecuador to bring God’s message to the Waodoni people (formerly known as the Aucas). In 1956, Jim Elliott, Nate Saint, Roger Youderian, Pete Fleming, and Ed McCully were speared to death on a beach while trying to bring peace and God’s message to this savage tribe of people. The story is amazing, sad, full of hope and peace, and new beginnings. It’s a story of great courage and greater forgiveness. The wives stayed and successfully ministered to the very men who had killed their husbands. Steve Saint was a small boy when his father was killed, but one of his father’s killers, Mincaye, is now a surrogate grandfather of sorts to his children. Steven Curtis Chapman’s album DECLARATION features Mincaye singing/chanting on the song No Greater Love. SCC also attempted to tell Mincaye’s story in the song God Follower and he dedicated it to the Waodoni people. God can do amazing things with those who are willing to follow Him – even to their deaths. I can’t say enough about this movie, yet I don’t know how to shorten my thoughts down into a single blog post. Just trust me and RENT IT.

On January 20th, the movie The End of the Spear will be released. It is going to be good, but it will be even better because I watched Beyond the Gates of Splendor first.

I leave you with the words sung by Steven Curtis Chapman and Mincaye:

No Greater Love

Man of courage with your message of peace what is that look in your eyes?
Why have you come to this faraway place?
What is this story you would lay down your life to tell?
What kind of love can this be?

There is no greater love than this
There is no greater gift that can ever be given
To be willing to die so another might live
There is no greater love than this

Broken hearted from all you have lost – How can you sing through your tears?
What is this music that can bear such a cost?
What is this fire that grows stronger than the wind?
What kind of flame can this be?

This is the love that God showed the world
When He gave us His Son
So we could know His love forever
Beyond the gates of splendor

“The Creation/Heaven Song” (Mincaye’s Song)

God, creating from nothing, has made all the things around us.
While our hearts are beating and we are alive, let’s all believe.
Believe without being afraid.
I also to God’s place am going.
We believers are going to God’s place.
Let us all believe that.
How can it be that we will go?
If we are clean in our hearts, then let’s be out of here.
We, the believing ones, shall go up to God’s place.
All of us believers who are still living, we will be saying to ourselves,
“We want to go up to God’s place.”

The Week in Review

Monday – Weighed in at Dr. Zack’s and I’ve lost 4 pounds since the first of the year. YEAH! I can’t do a cartwheel yet, but I feel 4 pounds lighter! 😉 Rearranged Homeschooling area. Cleaned -FUN! :{

Tuesday – DB staff meeting. Learned some new stuff – always do. Showed off the new tat to my friends since I wasn’t at pool night last Thursday. Talked on the phone…A LOT.

Wednesday – Started the day at Dr. Zack’s with the family, then to Starbucks for some chai. YUM! My health has improved greatly since receiving regular chiropractic care. We love Dr. Zack! He’s done wonders for our family. First day back to school since the month and a half long sabbatical for the holidays. Kids were antsy, but glad to be doing their work again. I guess the long break was more for me…go figure. Benny and I watched a movie – Beyond the Gates of SplendorAMAZING -more details in tomorrow’s post. Stayed up late doing my BSF homework (at the last minute – I never learn).

Thursday – Pete’s first day of BSF, he did great! Had to explain the whole food allergy thing to his teachers and bring in his own snacks for snacktime. :{ Max was thrilled to be back, and the drama queen pitched a fit because she wanted to go to the Children’s Museum instead. (good grief!) Once again I felt a little odd in my group, but I really like my leader and I was glad to be back too. Spent the evening with three children in a nice, new Laundromat washing a King Size quilt with baby peepee on it. :{ Yeah, yuk, I know. If anyone would like to buy me a quadruple loader washer for my birthday, I wouldn’t object at all. It would make laundry for 5 people a cinch, and I never know when these little laundry emergencies will occur.

Friday – (The BEST day of this whole week!) Spent the day as a family. Tried to go to the Children’s Museum, but they had a small fire on the outside of the building two nights before so they were closed for a few days. (I don’t watch the news) We went to the Denver Aquarium instead. VERY expensive, but it was worth it for a special family date. We saw fish in all shapes, sizes, and colors. And there were sharks-big ones, sea horses, jellyfish, Nemo & Dory, a giant turtle, and many other creatures. We even fed some reys. It was a bit scary at first, but it was SO cool! Then we ate at a great authentic Mexican restaurant. Ran errands and took naps in the afternoon. We were greatly blessed through the mail by some out of town friends. But the best part was attending the baptism of one of the former streetkids. She said she was excited to see our van pull into the church parking lot, and she told Benny he was part of her decision. What an awesome compliment.

Saturday – (Today) Mommy/ Zoe date all morning shopping at thrift stores. Humor me and my frugalness for a minute here. Some of my gems of the day? A fuzzy pink bathrobe for the drama queen (1.50), two pairs of blue jean overalls for Petey (1.50 each), A Vtech Crazy Legs Learning Bug (.75)(retails for 17.99) :), Roper cowboy boots for Max (3.50), a bag consisting of 3 babies, clothes, and other “necessities” for their care (3.00),and a lovely lunch with my daughter complete with Lemon Creme Cake and two forks. (So much for my 4 pounds). I love a bargain, and I’m teaching my daughter to do the same…I hope. She definitely likes the shopping part. 😉

I’m off to watch some weight training videos with Benny. We start our weight training program at the gym on Monday. HooRah! I can do this! The videos are bad, but the techniques are great, so I’ll put up with the guy’s ego so he can teach me what he knows. Pretty soon I’ll be able to snatch the pebble from his hand…

I’ve been posting on Supermom about a few of my kids favorite bedtime stalling techniques. I affectionately titled one post Another Zoe Zinger. The girl is a quick thinker and she always has an answer for everything, or atleast a good comeback. I’m one of those types that thinks of the clever thing to say about five minutes too late, so she must get this from her Popa! She’s only three years old, but she continually cracks me up and sometimes exasperates me as you’ll see in the following paragraph.

I have white plastic dishpans that I sort the kid’s clothes into as I fold them, then it’s their job to put them away. (They’re decorated all cutesy for each child and their favorite things – thanks Family Fun magazine!) Even Pete at two years old knows how to put his clothes in his dresser. The other day I called the kids into the T.V. room to get their tubs. Zoe immediately told me she has too many clothes to put them all away by herself, as she dramatically flung herself onto the couch. I smiled and said, “I tell you what, I’ll give you a drink of my Pepsi if you put them away all by yourself”. She didn’t miss a beat. “I tell you what” she said to me. “I’ll give you a thousand bucks if you put them away all by yourself“. I was shocked and all I could do was burst out laughing! The nerve of that girl!!! Since when did I start bargaining with her for her chores? How did I fall into that little trap in the first place? The story ended with me carrying her tub to her dresser and her doing the job alone. No Pepsi shared. The thousand bucks would have been nice though.

For the past year I’ve really been into Flylady and getting my home and family organized. We’ve been decluttering like crazy since moving to Colorado. When you move and have to leave stuff by the dumpster because you don’t have room for it in the moving truck, you have too much stuff! Well, I’ve gotten my kids in on the act of decluttering too. I pay them a set amount of change for every toy, book, or piece of clothing they decide to “bless” someone else with. We were cleaning up their rooms the other day and I commented about the number of toys all over the floor and that maybe we needed to declutter their rooms again and give some away. My lazy little stinkers readily agreed and starting bringing me toys to take to DAV so they wouldn’t have to put them away! WHY do I spend money on toys for them??? Granted they’re usually from yard sales and such, but they don’t need all of that STUFF!

Petey likes us to repeat ourselves. I’ll tell him something and he’ll look at me questioningly and say, “What?” I’ll repeat myself and he’ll say “What?” again. The third time I just say, “You heard me” after which he laughs…hard. It’s hilarious to him. So today at naptime I told him to lay down so I could cover him up with his blanket. He said, “What?” and before I could say anything he looked at me and said, “You stutter?” Then I laughed. Benny must say “I didn’t stutter” instead of my “You heard me”. Little stinker! 😉
