It’s already the 9th and I’m just now getting ready to begin a “new year”.  I usually have my planner finished for the next year by the middle of December. I just couldn’t get it together this time. 2007 was challenging, not that I want to be constantly looking back.  But sometimes that’s the best way to make note of what wasn’t- or still isn’t- working in my life so I can make changes. In my evaluation, I had to admit that I had been dragging a few dead horses for way too long and I had to cut them loose so I’d be free to walk forward with new vigor and purpose. It sounds so easy, but when you have been feeling the weight of something for so long, you get used to it and convince yourself it isn’t too heavy to handle. When you’re finally free, there is an adjustment period as your body gets used to the new “lightness”. That’s where I am today. And for the record, I used the cliche just for my husband – who teases me about using them at all.

I was supposed to go away for the weekend and enjoy 3 days of relaxation and refocusing (without my family) at my in-laws house while they’re out of state for a few weeks, but several feet of snow in the higher altitudes foiled my plan. I only cried a little. So I moved on to plan B. I went to the library and set up camp at a big table out of the main traffic areas. Like the cartoon in my last post, I pulled out a clean sheet of paper, surrounded myself with my favorite colors, and got to work creating my list of what is going to get my focus and attention this year. 4 1/2 hours later my writing hand was sore and my butt was asleep from sitting so long, but I had 14 pages of goals and notes and lists for 2008. Sound a little overzealous to you? Not really.

I needed a little refresher on goal setting and found The Goals Guy, Gary Ryan Blair. Out of all the websites I looked at, his was my favorite. It was straightforward and simple and I left the site prepared for my afternoon of planning. Combining what I learned at his site, and all of the seminars I’ve attended in the past, I came up with my own simplified plan. I’ve been influenced by many people and wish I could give credit to them all, but the list is long. If you’re interested in who these people are and how you can find them, email me and I’ll help you out.

Here’s the Niki Nowell formula for goal setting:

  1. State your goal clearly IN WRITING.
  2. Answer the “WHY?” question. Why is this a goal and how will it benefit you?
  3. Make a deadline. Is this a short term or long term goal? When will you expect results? Pick a date, write it on the calendar, and re-evaluate along the way. Adjust the deadline if needed.
  4. Rewards! Write down what rewards you will reap by achieving your goal. Are they physical? mental? spiritual?
  5. Define your plan. What are the steps you need to take to realize your goal? Be specific.

This is the simplified version, but works great for me. I remember things easier when I write them down. It’s also helpful when I go back later to evaluate if I’m on track to reach my goals. I have to admit, it’s been a few years since I’ve done this. I needed to get over the whole idea of New Year’s resolutions – which I now believe to be evil. 😉 The word “resolution” smacks of regret, moving away from something, and begins with feelings of past failures. I want to be moving towards something and begin with hope and anticipation of all my future holds.

My 14 pages was 20 goals covering the 4 major areas of my life: Personal Development, Family, Ministry, and Homeschooling. The overzealous part was that I color-coded the whole thing. (Stop laughing Tawnya!) I’m a J, remember?

I had an unplanned sabbatical from the blogosphere this past two weeks, so my apologies for the delay in the many posts I have in the works. We had some family stuff come up that needed attending to, but almost all is well now and I’m back.

In our family of five, at least one of us has been sick for the past two months. We just keep passing it around and the symptoms morph a little bit with each person. Petey was down on Christmas Day, and now it’s Zoe’s turn and she has a fever of 103. We could use your prayers for healing.

We didn’t keep with tradition for our holiday plans this year. We enjoyed a relaxing day at home with our friend Heather. Christmas afternoon, Benny took the two older kiddos to see The Water Horse, which they liked. Heather and I watched The Bourne Ultimatum at home while Petey slept. Instead of going out for Chinese food, Benny grilled his famous beer brats, and Heather made onion dip for chips and veggies. I didn’t cook a thing. 😉

The questions conversation has sparked some interesting discussions and I’ve really appreciated the comments and emails regarding how questions shape each of our faith journeys. I was also grateful at the timing of some of the comments that were uplifting. I look forward to future dialog about the questions.

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas with your loved ones!

Day 5 of Bedrest…

Just wanted to let you know I’m down with a SERIOUS case of the Flu.  I’d appreciate prayers for healing.  As usual, Benny is handling everything and being the awesome husband that he is.  We canceled our Thanksgiving plans and I’m not sure when I’ll be up and around.  I’ll be back to blogging sometime next week.

Until then, don’t forget about the blanket drive my friend Jan is hosting for SEVENS at her blog.

I hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving with your families! 😉

I’m really enjoying the discussion that has been happening here lately. I have another post that will be up on Monday morning that is related to the discussion and comments made here this past week, so I hope you’ll join me and leave your mark.

Today I want to send you to the blogs of a few friends that have joined us in our ministry efforts.

My friend Jan is raising awareness about our ministry and the plight of the homeless and at-risk youth and young adults we work with. Through the month of November she is hosting a blanket drive that also includes gift cards, ski gloves, and hand warmers for us to share with our friends on the streets during the colder months approaching. Her goal is 100 blankets and as many hand warmers, ski gloves, and gift cards as possible. Please check out her blog and join us by donating what you can. Her post also features some of the art by our talented friend Tonya.

Among my friend Kevin’s many talents is screen printing. He was recently inspired to design a t-shirt to sell to anyone who wants one and donate the proceeds to SEVENS. Go to his blog for more details. You can have a one of a kind (well almost) shirt and help our ministry at the same time.

We are in the middle of a very difficult phase of our ministry. Several of our supporters have come to the end of their time commitment to us and are no longer contributing to our ministry financially. Some have found other very worthy causes to give to, and some have had life changes or hardships of their own that prevent them from continuing their giving. We are so grateful for all that we have received and to all who have given and continue to give. But our needs have not changed and we are severely falling short of our budget for our salary, ministry expenses, and items needed to pass along to our friends on the streets. If you or someone you know is able to join us in our efforts here, we would love to hear from you! We are looking for individuals, families, small groups, churches, and businesses that can make a monthly commitment to help us with our costs and expenses. Ofcourse we also welcome one-time and occasional gifts and have added a Paypal button to our blogs and our website to make that more convenient. While donations made through Paypal are NOT tax deductible, all donations made to SEVENS or the Nowells through our ministry ARE tax deductible. CLICK HERE to go directly to our “How To Help/Give” page for the address.

One person can make a difference. Many people joining their gifts, talents, and resources together and bonded by a common goal can change the world…

In addition to Friday Family Movie Night, we also watch Extreme Makeover: Home Edition as a family on Sunday nights.  It is by far the best show on television (Yeah ABC) and I’m looking forward to the airing of the episode that will feature my friend Kim and her family!  THEY WERE CHOSEN!!!

I waited and waited this morning, hoping my phone would ring before I had to shut it off when I got to church.  I prayed.  I told several of my friends that I was waiting to hear if the Woodhouses had been chosen or not.  After services I went outside and turned my phone back on and had a message from Kim’s best friend letting me know the bus had arrived this morning! I laughed and cried and jumped up and down a bit, then told my friends who were still hanging around.  I was am so excited!  I want to know a thousand little details that I don’t have yet.  Obviously Kim’s going to be unavailable for awhile, so we’re trusting her friends and family to keep all of us locals apprised of the plans for the build and the reveal so we can be there in the crowd to scream, “MOVE THAT BUS!”

Thank you to all who prayed and are going to continue to pray for the Woodhouses throughout this process.  This is a HUGE blessing and I couldn’t be more excited for them!  This sweet family is such a gift to so many people and I’m just thrilled to know that some of their dreams are coming true.  Personally, I’m praying for healing for Kayla as well.  I hate the thought of her living with these medical conditions her whole life and I want God to heal her young body!  He just provided a new home and numerous other miracles for their family and I know He can heal her too, so I’m asking for it.

I’ll let everyone know when the reveal is and when the show will air as soon as I know!
