My 8 year old son is an amazing kid. I know a lot of parents say that about their offspring, but Max is a wonder kid. He’s compassionate and has a strong sense of justice. He is a leader to the point of bossiness. We’re working on that one. 😉 He is a visionary and a planner. He takes initiative so much that even older kids tend to follow when he leads. He’s bold and confident. He is really good at rallying people to his cause. For example, we’re making plans to close in our patio so we’ll have another room for homeschooling and art. He decided he wants to open a library and art studio in the new addition. He asked me when the project would be completed and I told him that depends on what we can find on Craig’s List, but we’d like to have it done by summer. He chose July 18th and made a sign for his Grand Opening. Then, unbeknown to me, he went to our neighbors to procure signatures as a promise they would become members of his Library/Art Studio. The kid came home with 2 signatures! I didn’t know whether to laugh or be embarrassed, or both.

One day a guy came driving down our street and threw some trash out his window. Max yelled at him and thankfully the guy’s music was so loud he didn’t hear him. Max immediately picked up the trash and he and his friends created “No Littering” signs and picketed in my front yard for awhile. I didn’t make him stop, but I did point out several things to him. 1. It’s not smart or o.k. to yell at adults – especially strangers that you’re accusing of doing something wrong. 2. Not many people drive by our house, and picketing about littering in our mobile home park is probably not going to accomplish much. 3. Picketing in OUR yard when we don’t litter doesn’t make much sense. 4. Picketing itself is a waste of time and there are others ways to combat littering. The irony was that two hours later I had to remind him and his friends to pick the signs up out of the yard and throw them away.

He wants to make a difference in the world and has some excellent ideas about how to do that. He is definitely in a time of his life when he needs some serious direction. Hopefully we’re providing that without squashing his creativity and sense of accomplishment. I felt a little guilty about the littering incident, but my heart was that I wanted to teach him. We don’t need anymore picketers in the world. We need doers. I think he gets it. We’ll see.

So back to the blue hair. I know you’re wondering. 🙂 Way back when I was in high school, I would get so disgusted with parents and other people who would treat a kid badly because he had colored hair. Like that is some indication of a rebellious spirit or a future plagued with juvenile delinquency. I was always a little in awe at the courageousness of those who could pull off green, black, pink, blue, or any other hair color. I was brave, but not that brave. When Benny and I got into youth ministry, the trend with adults condemning colored hair (or funky styles) continued. I swore to him then that hair wouldn’t matter in our family. It’s just hair. It can be cut and it grows back. Choosing your hair style and color is a form of creativity and personal style. Yes, those words have come back to bite me in the bum. lol Max has already been a bleached blond, a red head, and completely bald…all his choice. A few months ago he began asking to color his hair blue. Honestly, I wasn’t thrilled at first. We are part of a homeschooling group and I already feel like our family stretches them. But he said he really wanted to try it and Benny reminded me of MY words regarding hair, so I couldn’t argue too much. Benny took him for a haircut and color – which wasn’t very expensive given the shortness of his hair. The first few days he kept track of how many people commented on liking his hair. He totally ignored the people who had looks of shock, horror, or disapproval on their faces. Random people in WalMart commented both positively and negatively, which still makes me laugh. Why should we care what a total stranger thinks of his blue hair? The real test (in my mind) was our homeschool group. Would they care for his heart? The day after Max’s color job was class picture day at school. I figured there were going to be some homeschool moms hating me. I was home sick that day – I promise it was unrelated to his hair! Benny said there were a lot of teenagers that said they wished their parents would let them color their hair. They kept touching Max’s head telling him how cool he looked and how lucky he is. Many people have asked, “What’s he going to do when he’s a teenager?” I honestly don’t know, but it will be bold, creative and colorful. It will be positive, his idea, and he’ll get other people on board. Such is life with Max.

Stop by Max’s blog sometime. “The Hero Chronicles” can be found at www.maxallennowell.wordpress.com. There’s not much on there yet, but now that the home computer is working well again, he wants to start posting stuff he likes.

It’s already the 9th and I’m just now getting ready to begin a “new year”.  I usually have my planner finished for the next year by the middle of December. I just couldn’t get it together this time. 2007 was challenging, not that I want to be constantly looking back.  But sometimes that’s the best way to make note of what wasn’t- or still isn’t- working in my life so I can make changes. In my evaluation, I had to admit that I had been dragging a few dead horses for way too long and I had to cut them loose so I’d be free to walk forward with new vigor and purpose. It sounds so easy, but when you have been feeling the weight of something for so long, you get used to it and convince yourself it isn’t too heavy to handle. When you’re finally free, there is an adjustment period as your body gets used to the new “lightness”. That’s where I am today. And for the record, I used the cliche just for my husband – who teases me about using them at all.

I was supposed to go away for the weekend and enjoy 3 days of relaxation and refocusing (without my family) at my in-laws house while they’re out of state for a few weeks, but several feet of snow in the higher altitudes foiled my plan. I only cried a little. So I moved on to plan B. I went to the library and set up camp at a big table out of the main traffic areas. Like the cartoon in my last post, I pulled out a clean sheet of paper, surrounded myself with my favorite colors, and got to work creating my list of what is going to get my focus and attention this year. 4 1/2 hours later my writing hand was sore and my butt was asleep from sitting so long, but I had 14 pages of goals and notes and lists for 2008. Sound a little overzealous to you? Not really.

I needed a little refresher on goal setting and found The Goals Guy, Gary Ryan Blair. Out of all the websites I looked at, his was my favorite. It was straightforward and simple and I left the site prepared for my afternoon of planning. Combining what I learned at his site, and all of the seminars I’ve attended in the past, I came up with my own simplified plan. I’ve been influenced by many people and wish I could give credit to them all, but the list is long. If you’re interested in who these people are and how you can find them, email me and I’ll help you out.

Here’s the Niki Nowell formula for goal setting:

  1. State your goal clearly IN WRITING.
  2. Answer the “WHY?” question. Why is this a goal and how will it benefit you?
  3. Make a deadline. Is this a short term or long term goal? When will you expect results? Pick a date, write it on the calendar, and re-evaluate along the way. Adjust the deadline if needed.
  4. Rewards! Write down what rewards you will reap by achieving your goal. Are they physical? mental? spiritual?
  5. Define your plan. What are the steps you need to take to realize your goal? Be specific.

This is the simplified version, but works great for me. I remember things easier when I write them down. It’s also helpful when I go back later to evaluate if I’m on track to reach my goals. I have to admit, it’s been a few years since I’ve done this. I needed to get over the whole idea of New Year’s resolutions – which I now believe to be evil. 😉 The word “resolution” smacks of regret, moving away from something, and begins with feelings of past failures. I want to be moving towards something and begin with hope and anticipation of all my future holds.

My 14 pages was 20 goals covering the 4 major areas of my life: Personal Development, Family, Ministry, and Homeschooling. The overzealous part was that I color-coded the whole thing. (Stop laughing Tawnya!) I’m a J, remember?

I have quite an extensive collection of quotes by various famous people, my favorite authors, and my quirky friends. When I was in college, it was “the thing to do” to hang quotes on your dorm room door. Even then I was surrounded by friends who loved the written word as much as I did. I decided to share a few of my favorite quotes of late. Enjoy!

“In the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins – not by strength but by perseverance.” ~H. Jackson Brown

“Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.” ~Ronald E. Osborn

“Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” ~Berthold Auerbach

“Reading furnishes the mind only with material for knowledge; it is thinking that makes what we read ours.” ~John Locke

“It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” ~J.K. Rowling

“If you make people think they’re thinking, they’ll love you; But if you really make them think, they’ll hate you. ~Don Marquis

“But to become a freak one needs a strong character and unusual determination.” ~George Burchett, Memoirs of a Tattooist.

“The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one.” ~Elbert Hubbard

It’s one of my favorite days of the month. Specifically-my day off. The sky today has been a kaleidescope of weather. It was raining when I woke up, now it’s mostly cloudy, with the sun breaking through for an occasional hello. I’m sitting here in a coffee shop relaxing and surfing the web. I’ve been blog hopping for the past hour and leaving comments for friends. It seems like I haven’t had the time to do that much lately. Last week was pretty rough with school starting and my sad attempt to get my family back on a routine. I’m still trying to figure out how to do it all.

It seems I’ve had more cloudy days than sunny ones lately. I’m struggling to see a future with a lack of financial stress, so I’m looking back and seeing God’s faithfulness in providing for my family when we didn’t think we’d make it through the month financially, like this month. I’m working through some hard issues with a few of my friendships, but as I look back I clearly see where He provided friends to walk through some difficult times and days of loneliness. I have great friends and I’m thankful. I’ve been too emotional dealing with my kids and the balancing act of homeschooling. I am a teacher. I’ve been teaching my kids since they entered the world. I’m not proud of some of the unspoken lessons they’ve learned from me, but I know I’ve taught them (and still am teaching them) the things that matter. They love God. They love others. They are compassionate and people of character. They are world changers. I wouldn’t give that up for a straight 365 days of tough homeschooling. The routines will come and things will get better. I know this to be true.

Why is it that when the storm is raging around us all we see is the destruction outside and not the strong walls that protect us? Surely I’m not alone in this. There are storms I’m strong through – an anchor firmly planted – and then there are storms that sweep me out to sea. ~sigh~

My day off. A day of rest. A day to rejuvenate myself so I can face the days ahead. It’s crazy that I look forward to this day with such anticipation and when it arrives I have a hard time deciding how to spend it. What do I enjoy? How do I relax? I read. I drink tea and chai. I write. I devour magazines, mentally filing away the many tips that will improve my life and those of my family and friends. I chat on the phone. I mark up my Bible with highlighting pens. I sing. I blog. I love my days of rest, but resting doesn’t feel natural to me. I have to plan for it. Work for it. Fight for it.

Back in July when Tawnya was here we toured Celestial Seasonings. This painting is one of the first things you see when you enter the visitor center. It instantly brought a smile to my face because it really spoke to me. It encompassed what I need most in my life…rest. Thanks to Bruce Wolfe for painting it. You can see more of his art on the Celestial Seasonings website.

This is “BOOK WEEK” at MY Journey. Grab a cup of something yummy (someone be a dear and make me some chai) and get comfortable in an easy chair somewhere. I am currently lounging in my beige, leather, swivel/rocker recliner in what my friend Tonia calls my studio. Doesn’t that sound creative? My home office is definitely on it’s way to becoming my creative space, but right now it’s cluttered and unorganized – not in a creative way at all. My laptop is resting on my lap (who’s the creative genius that came up with that name?) and I’m excitedly thinking ahead to my posts this week and trying to figure out how many more times I can fit the word creative into this paragraph. 😉

I’ve been doing blog tours for a few months now and I’ve loved every single one of the books I’ve helped promote here. A few of you have said you’ve bought the books I reviewed and enjoyed them yourselves. That’s great since that’s the point…getting the author’s works out there in everyone’s hands. On Wednesday I’ll be reviewing Allison Bottke’s newest book, One Little Secret, so be sure to stop by to read what I thought and leave your own comment for me or the author. She’ll be stopping by too. Mrs. Bottke is the driving force behind the God Allows U-Turns books and ministry. She is a gifted, inspirational writer and speaker. I’m looking forward to sharing her book with you. I’m also holding a drawing for a free copy of One Little Secret. If you’re interested, send me an email and I’ll put your name in the hat. The winner will be notified by email and announced on this blog on Friday, August 31st.

Susan May Warren was one of the first authors I started reading when I ventured back into the world of fiction. She has written several books I’ve enjoyed since meeting her last summer through my friend Paula. She took the time to sit with me and answer my many questions about balancing family, homeschooling, and writing…some of my own passions. She’s been holding a contest this summer called, “Ask the writer anything” and this week she chose to answer MY question…which was really several questions. Read my question and her answer at http://susanmaywarren.typepad.com/scribbles/ She’s a funny, talented, and entertaining lady. I hope to get to know her better someday.

There’s more, but I have to save something for tomorrow’s post, don’t I?
